Facebook Ad Creative Testing for Local Businesses

Short answer: To test 3 creatives on Meta without wasting budget, use Meta's own testing tools instead of switching ads on and off. Change one thing per ad, cap the test spend, and let the test run at least 7 days without edits. Then judge the ads on cost per result, such as cost per call or lead, and keep the winner running.

Key Takeaways

Point Details
Use a real test Meta does not recommend testing by turning ad sets or campaigns on and off by hand. It says this can lead to unreliable results.
Two built-in options A creative test runs inside an existing campaign. An A/B test in Experiments splits your audience so nobody sees more than one version.
Cap the test spend For a creative test, Meta suggests using no more than 20% of your existing budget on the test ads.
Give it time Meta recommends A/B tests of at least 7 days. Tests can run up to 30 days.
Change one thing Meta says results are more conclusive when versions are identical except for the variable you test.
Judge on results Meta's A/B test picks the winner on lowest cost per result. We look at cost per call, lead or booked job, not clicks.

Why do local businesses waste money testing ads?

In our view, most waste comes from three habits.

The first is informal testing: switching ads on and off by hand. Meta says plainly that it does "not recommend testing informally, such as by turning ad sets or campaigns on and off manually." It adds that this "can lead to inefficient ad delivery and unreliable test results."

The second is editing too soon. Meta's learning phase page says that editing an ad, ad set or campaign during learning will "reset learning and delay our delivery system's ability to optimize."

The third is testing too many things at once. Meta advises advertisers to "Avoid high ad volumes," because with many ads "the delivery system learns less about each ad and ad set."

Three creatives is a sensible size for a local budget. Each ad can still collect its own results.

What are Meta's two ways to test creative?

Meta offers two built-in routes.

1. Creative test (inside an existing campaign). Meta says that in a creative test "you can compare up to 7 creative variants." The test is built into a campaign you already run, "so that high-performing ads can continue to run after the test with delivery system learnings retained." Meta notes there is "no need to merge them into another campaign where the learnings would reset."

2. A/B test (in Experiments). Meta says an A/B test "enables you to compare up to 5 versions of an ad." Your audience "is randomized and split into separate groups so nobody sees more than one version." Meta picks the winner as "the version that has the lowest cost per result for your selected key metrics."

For three new videos, we usually start with the creative test. It keeps your working campaign running and caps test spend. For a cleaner split, use the A/B test.

How do you set up a creative test with 3 ads?

  1. In Ads Manager, open an existing campaign. Meta says creative testing "is supported in campaigns using the Highest volume bid strategy only."
  2. At the ad level, find the Creative test section and click Set up test.
  3. Choose how many copies of the ad to make. Meta allows "2 to 7 copies." For three new creatives, make three, then swap in your new videos.
  4. Choose how much of the budget the test ads can spend. Meta suggests "no more than 20% of your existing budget to help reduce the potential of impacting your overall campaign performance during the test."
  5. Set the test duration and the metric you will use to compare the ads. Then publish.

Two details are easy to miss. Meta says the test ads "will start running on their ad set schedule when you publish them." The test schedule "only determines when results are measured."

And the test does not clean up after itself. Meta says it "does not make any automatic changes based on the results." So put a reminder in your calendar for the end date.

How long should a creative test run, and how much should it spend?

For A/B tests, Meta recommends "a minimum of 7-day tests." It adds that tests "can only be run for a maximum of 30 days," and that "tests shorter than 7 days may produce inconclusive results." If customers usually take longer than a week to act, Meta suggests a longer test, giving 10 days as an example.

On budget, Meta does not give a number. It says your test "should have a budget that will produce enough results to confidently determine a winning strategy."

One useful marker is the learning phase. Meta says ad sets usually exit learning "after about 50 results in the week after the ad set's last significant edit."

Many local businesses will not get 50 calls or leads a week from one test. In our view, the fix is not to spend more right away. Instead:

  • Test bigger differences, such as three different opening scenes, not three shades of the same caption.
  • Run the test longer, up to Meta's 30-day limit.
  • Treat a close result as a tie, not a winner. Meta's creative test page notes that "A confidence level is not included" in its results.

What should the 3 creatives test?

Pick one variable. Meta's best practices say "You'll have more conclusive results for your test if your ad sets are identical except for the variable that you're testing."

For a local service business, in our view, the opening of the video is a good first variable. Meta's video guidance says to "Feature your brand and key message within the first 3 seconds." So keep the offer, the length and the ending the same, and change only the first few seconds.

Three openings to test:

  • The person. The owner or a tech says the company name and what you do.
  • The proof. A finished job or a real review, shown with permission.
  • The problem. The issue your customer has, shown in a plain way.

Short on footage? On October 6, 2026, Meta said video generation from static assets in Advantage+ creative "is now generally available." See our guide to Meta video ads built from photos.

What does a real workflow look like?

Here is one generic example of how our done-for-you team runs a three-creative test. All values are placeholders, not client results.

The business: a home services company with one Meta campaign already running for calls.

Step 1, write the hypothesis (day 1). We write one line, such as: "An opening that shows our tech on site will get a lower cost per call than one that opens on a review."

Step 2, build three videos (days 2 to 4).

  1. Video A opens on the tech at the door, saying the company name.
  2. Video B opens on a finished job.
  3. Video C opens on the customer's problem.
  4. All three use the same offer, the same length and the same end card. Captions on.

Step 3, set up the test (day 5).

  1. Confirm the campaign uses the Highest volume bid strategy.
  2. Set up a creative test with three copies and swap in Videos A, B and C.
  3. Give the test ads a small share of the existing budget, at or under Meta's 20% suggestion.
  4. Set the comparison metric to cost per result for calls, and the duration to at least 7 days.

Step 4, leave it alone (7+ days). No edits to the ads, the ad set or the budget while the test runs.

Step 5, read and act (end of test).

  1. Compare cost per call, and booked jobs per ad if the business tracks them.
  2. Keep the best ad running. Turn off the others by hand.
  3. Write down what won. Use it to brief the next three creatives.

Can Meta's AI tell you which creative is working?

Partly. On October 6, 2026, Meta said Ads Creative Studio is rolling out to more advertisers, to help them "understand what is working and why." For video, Meta's help page says it uses metrics "like hold rate, hook rate and thruplays."

There are limits. Meta says "This product may not be available to you right now." Its insights cover ad sets "that have completed the ranking learning phase." For a new local account, a planned three-creative test is still the clearer way to learn.

When should you hand creative testing to a team?

The steps above are a fair first test. Hand it off when:

  • You already spend on Meta each month and new creative is the bottleneck.
  • You want one team to write the hypothesis, produce the videos, run the test and report what won.

That is what our done-for-you team does. Nothing runs until you approve it. Results vary with your offer, your market and platform delivery. Where streaming TV or streaming radio fits your plan, we place it through media partners. See how we run ads across channels.

Book a growth strategy call and we will look at your current ads and tell you plainly whether we are a fit.

FAQ

How many creatives should a local business test at once on Meta?

Three is a practical start. Meta's creative test allows 2 to 7 copies, but Meta also advises avoiding high ad volumes.

How long should a Facebook creative test run?

Meta recommends a minimum of 7 days for A/B tests and allows up to 30 days. It suggests running longer, such as 10 days, if customers usually take more than a week to act.

How much budget should a creative test use?

Meta does not set a number. For its creative test tool, it suggests using no more than 20% of your existing budget on the test ads.

Should I turn ads on and off to see which one works?

No. Meta does not recommend testing informally by turning ad sets or campaigns on and off manually, because it can lead to unreliable results.

Does Meta stop the losing ads after a creative test?

No. Meta says the creative test does not make automatic changes based on the results. The test ads keep running until you turn them off or the ad set ends.
